The Glessners - Puebla, Mexico

Have you ever been with half a million people packed into a town square?  We were when Barbara-Lee's parents visited us in late April and early May, which gave us the opportunity to travel a bit and see some interesting  sights  in Mexico City:

Protest in Mexico City

Extreme traffic.

Our day in Mexico City left an impression.  It probably was good to be exposed to a bit more than the sunny side of life.  Mexico City is a place that's needy, and often larger than life.  But here in Pueblo Nuevo (our neighborhood in Puebla), there are needs and opportunities as well.

What's Happened

We enjoyed our time with Dad & Mom Kieselowsky, and were able to show them around Puebla, as well as exposing (is that the right word?) them to some of our ministry activities.  It was great to have Dad K at Madero University to meet some of the people Tim works with.  It was sad to see many people praying to statues in some of the churches we showed them.  It was fun to debate the content of some of the food we ate.

A Hike During the Retreat

Ahead

We will be increasing our role with the youth group very soon, as the Magallons are leaving for a year in the States.  We will be in a supporting role, helping two of the youth who will assume week-to-week responsibilities.  As summer approaches we are thinking about how we can spend time with teens in our area to establish and build relationships during their vacations.  We hope to do a VBS and develop some contacts with children and their families in our neighborhood.  Also, we'll be taking some teens to a camp in July.  Today we had the privilege of meeting with the director of a local Jr. High who would like us to begin to give "talks" to students and invite them to our youth ministry.  That's an exciting opportunity!

The day Dad & Mom left we had a Purity Retreat for the youth group.  We spent a day and a night at the Magallons' house with ten of the youth and had three sessions geared to give them encouragement and a Biblical grounding for sexual purity--just as urgent a struggle here in Mexico as it is in the U.S.  Tim preached the following Sunday, then was able to spend some time with a new couple that is coming to Bible Study (we're now covering the Gospel of Mark).  Tuesday was Mother's Day--always May 10th in Mexico.

PRAYER

1. Please pray for the youth ministry as we take on the role of youth sponsors--helping leaders among the youth to keep things running.  Please pray for Leandro and Katherine, who will be responsible for many of the activities.

2. Please pray for responsiveness to the gospel in Tim's Monday night study.  Tim met just today with a young man who plans to start attending as well.

3. Please pray for Tim's Grandma Hower, who is facing a terminal battle with cancer.  She is trusting the Lord, and we are very proud of her, but please pray for strength, grace, and peace.  We will be driving up to Texas in the next few weeks to spend some time with her.

PRAISE

1. We are thankful that a couple, Silvia & Sergio have started coming to Tim's Monday night Bible Study.  We are studying Mark's gospel.  They have great interest and we've been able to spend some good times with them answering questions about the Bible.  Silvia is the lady from Madero University that we mentioned in February.  Thank you for your prayers!

2. We are thankful that the Hudsons are here, and are looking forward to working with them.

3. We are thankful for the teens who participated in the retreat as well as several from the neighborhood who have started coming to youth group on Mondays.

Glessner Giggles

Drew and Friends

Drew feels ready to share a few thoughts on the highlights of life for other kids (not all of them are necessarily compatible; he's still working out a coherent, consistent world view):

  1. Learning to communicate in Spanish is easy, especially when you don't have to say anything; you just stare pointedly with your big eyes, and the shopkeeper melts and gives you what you want (Mom & Dad have a different take on this one).

  2. Praying is fun (and a good way to hold off bedtime).  You can thank God for food, toys, special people, and even (strangely enough) discipline.

  3. Grandparents are the best.

  4. You can learn Bible verses, even when you're little.  Can you learn to say Psalm 121:8 with me?

  5. Neighbor kids are fun to play with!

Thank you for your prayers!

In Christ,

Tim, Barbara-Lee, & Drew

PS: Again, we are experimenting with the very latest in technology (;>)  Please feel free to let us know if this doesn't come through legibly.
